Do you suffer from dry skin? Do you live in a dry climate? Maybe both? Girl, I feel you.
When it comes to my scalp, lips and legs, I have to make sure I keep up with regular moisturizing all year round, but winter-time just makes everything drier! Add on top of that that I moved to Egypt, and my skin might as well be part of the desert…
Over the last year I’ve been experimenting and trying out new products to see what worked and what didn’t. Overall, I’m super happy with a handful of beauties that have hydrated my world!
If you can’t find these products near you, you can order any of these products online simply by clicking on the image. Yes, these are affiliate links and anything I make helps run this blog as best I can for you! You can read my full disclosure here.
Ready to feel moisturized? Grab your hand lotion and lets dive into silky smoothness!
Starting with our most important feature. Le visage. Now, this is not going to include anything to do with acne or overly-sensitive skin. I have somewhat oily and dry skin, so a typical combination type skin. I also don’t break out easily. If you are in the category range, then this should be helpful! If not, maybe some of these products will still help, because this will strictly focus on dry skin.
The dry skin on my face is mostly concentrated in the areas on each side of the nose, as well as the brow line and all over the forehead. What I do to try to keep my facial skin looking fresh and dewy is:
- remove make-up before going to bed – one of the worst things for my skin is to go to sleep with make up on. It clogs up the pores, and creates two little nasty patches of dry flakey skin on either side of my nose.
- use high-end make-up for foundation – I know drugstore make-up can be just as good sometimes, but if you’re putting something that will sit directly on your skin for a good part of the day, then a high-end, high-quality product is the best thing to do for yourself.
- gently exfoliate in the shower – the shower is a great time to exfoliate and remove impurities, just be sure to do so without stressing your skin
- do a facial routine at least once a week – this is a solid 20-30 minutes dedicated to the maintenance and upkeep of your facial skin. I recommend doing it after a bath or shower, when your pores are open.
- wear SUNSCREEN – seriously, getting burned over your beach or summer holiday for bragging rights is NOT worth it! You’re not just drying out your skin, you are destroying it. Anything else to so with sun protection (sunglasses, hat), DO IT!
Ok, now on to the products I have been using for my routine that I simply LOVE!
Products Used for A Dry Face
“Angels on Bare Skin” by LUSH
Oh my goodness, this stuff smells divine! A combination of almonds and lavender, this gentle exfoliate is what I use most regularly. Basically every time I shower, I use this. While it’s not potent and doesn’t make a huge night and day impact, I notice my skin fairs better when I use this often then when I don’t. It’s all natural ingredients, so I don’t have to worry about any reaction at all. It keeps really well, and you don’t need much for each use, so it lasts a long time. I still have my jar from August!
You can get the full jar too, or if you just want to try it out, you can go with the half portion. By the way, even my husband has been using it to deal with ingrown hairs and dry skin too! Don’t tell him I told you…
Rose Face Mask by fresh
I got this as a sample, and I love it! I have very dark eye circles that can be fairly pronounced if I don’t watch my skin or sleep well. Any product that helps with evening out skin tone, I try out. This mask doesn’t do miracles, but I do notice my skin looking just a bit more radiant and my dark circles soften. But on top of that, it makes my skin feel so dewy! It is a hydrating mask after all, and it lives up to its name!
Take a deep breath by Philosophy
This is my go-to facial moisturizer. It is an oil-free oxygenating gel cream for either morning or at night. I like to put it on before bed, after I have finished washing my face or after a facial care routine. Since I have oily skin on certain parts of my face (main my T zone) anything that can both moisturize my face AND not make it oily is a big winner in my books! I can’t get enough of this lovely cream. I need more actually…
This is usually a greater issue in the winter time for me, but it’s important to keep your lips soft and smooth all year long! You never know when you want to give a certain someone a kiss!
Before we get into products, just a couple habits that deal with lips that we should talk about.
- DO NOT lick your lips when they feel dry! It will make your lips worse in the long-run.
- do not rip off the peeling skin because you know exactly what will happen. Yup, you’ll pull off good skin along with it and cause a bleed. No one wants to kiss a girl with bleeding lips. Unless you’re a vampire?
Products Used for Dry Lips
SUGAR by fresh: This is a tinted, all-natural, lip treatment stick that I am IN LOVE with! I have never had something like this before, and I even asked a Sephora worker if she could recommend a similar product (since not all Sephoras carry this product yet) and she said it was quite unique!
This baby feels like a silky coat of moisture and protection on your lips that is heavenly! Not only is it made with all-natural ingredients, but it also has SPF 15 to protect from sun rays. So we have a lip gloss that moisturizes and protects your lips while leaving them feel baby-smooth, but guess what? There’s a bonus! This stuff comes in COLOURS, and they are gorgeous! I personally own both Petal and Poppy, a blush nude and a warm red that I can wear with any look! You wouldn’t believe the hunt I was on in Europe over Christmas holidays to find more SUGAR lippies….
Dry Hands, Arms and Legs
One of the things I hate about winter is how my skin can literally look like the bottom of the Death Valley floor! Legs can be so easily neglected in the winter, since we hardly see them! And if we do see them and are mortified by the sight, a pair of sweatpants or long fluffy socks can hide the horror.
Skin care for arms & legs is not difficult, but we should remember to pay attention to them once in a while. I’ll get to hands in a moment, but first my routine for arms & legs consists of:
- Shaving less often in the winter (because, who doesn’t want an extra layer? Go European for a while!) which puts less stress on the skin in the drier season
- Moisturizing legs and arms as soon as you have towelled off. This way the pores are still open and will take in all the good stuff from the moisturizer, making them plump and fresh.
- Gentle exfoliation while in the bath. I do this maybe once or twice a month, mostly for my arms.
That’s pretty much it. Like I said, not complicated. Now onto hands. The main thing that gets my goat when it comes to keeping hands moisturized, is not getting a cream that has an ‘painfully addicting’ quality. You probably have experienced this. If you regularly use a commercial hand cream and notice a tender maybe even stinging or burning sensation on your hands that can only be soothed by using said hand cream, then your body has become dependent on that product due to the unnatural ingredients it has, and I personally hate this sensation. This is why I only use very natural hand creams.
Products Used for Dry Hands/Body
Alverde – Cranberry Macadamia
I got this as a gift in Germany, and I fell in love with it the moment I opened it! Firstly, the smell is unbelievable! It has become one of my most favourite smells ever! Once again, this is an all-natural product and it is great for the hands and body. Sadly, this scent was a Christmas limited edition. Naturally, I had to find a new scent to love. Alverde, luckily, has an incredible line of skin care products that are divine!
This oil lotion is heaven-scent with its organic jasmine! I also have the body lotion, and I think what I love about this product is how creamy it feels. Since it has no toxic or harmful chemicals, it doesn’t cause your skin to become dependent or ‘addicted’, it just feels moist and soft like a baby’s bum!
LUSH Charity Pot Lotion
We started with Lush and now we’re ending with Lush. This is my second favourite lotion cream, for pretty much all the same reasons. It may not be a creamy-thick as alverde, but it is still natural, soothing, and you get to help a cause with every pot you buy! My recent one went to helping Green Thumbs Growing Kids, an organization in Toronto to teach kids how to grow sustainable gardens! So you get a great quality product, and help the larger community.
Are you feeling silky smooth and rejuvenated yet? If not, any of these gorgeous high-quality products (for not necessarily a high price!) are available to order online, or at their corresponding shops!
I have another blog post coming up on taking care of dry scalp, because that is a MAJOR problem area for me, and I have tried tons of products and remedies to deal with dandruff, but I’m still doing some research and trying things out, so that won’t appear for a little while.
In the meantime, what products do you swear by for dry skin? Do you use any of the products I mentioned? Are you excited to try any of them out? Let me know in the comments below!
